Two massive explosions on Saturday afternoon, May 13, 2000, completely changed life in the Roombeek district. Even years later, the fireworks disaster still occupies the minds of many people, and the consequences remain visible in the neighborhood. Discover the impressive story of Roombeek during a special presentation and tour by the House of Stories. Experienced ambassadors will tell you about the history, emotions, and architecture of this unique district in Enschede.

The tour starts in the restaurant of the House of Stories. You will be welcomed with a cup of coffee or tea. During a short presentation, you will learn more about what happened on the day of the disaster, the (textile) history of the district, and the reconstruction with its unique architecture. Furthermore, attention will be paid to the origins of the House of Stories, its current function, the contents of the Cabinet containing various elements that serve as reminders of the disaster, and the Silent Room – important symbols for commemorating and processing the disaster.

After the presentation, you will set off with the ambassador(s) for a tour through the Roombeek district. Along the way, they tell —sometimes with their personal story— about the history of the neighborhood, the disaster, and the impressive reconstruction that followed.
